Overview

The Gross Tech Group Lead position is intended for individuals with prior experience working as a gross technician. The individual in this position will perform all routine gross technician functions, handle escalated issues and troubleshoot quality issues. The individual will be responsible conducting gross examinations of surgical pathology specimens under appropriate supervision. The individual provides supervisory level coverage for the day to day operations of the surgical gross area in the supervisor’s absence.  The individual will work closely with the pathologist(s) to oversee the grossing area.  This position is intended for laboratories without pathologists’ assistant level grossing personnel.  

Responsibilities


  • Assists the supervisor or manager in the day-to-day operation of the surgical gross area on the assigned   shift.  Helps to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of services provided by the department.  

  • Capable of performing all of the duties/responsibilities of a Gross Technician II.   

  • Will oversee performance of Gross Technicians.  

  • Capable of grossing high complexity specimens under direct and indirect supervision, as applicable to training and experience.  

  • Demonstrated ability to handle broader range of specimens with indirect supervision.  

  • Confer with and /or make recommendations to the supervisor concerning the operation of the department including policies, procedures, and equipment applications.  

  • Provide technical instructions, training and guidance to technicians/technologists, students and lab aides in techniques, instrumentation, and organization of work.  

  • Assist supervisor in maintaining and troubleshooting equipment/instrumentation.  

  • Adhere to laboratory’s quality control policies, and document all quality control activities; has the ability to recognize outliers and correct them.   

  • Differentiate acceptable and unacceptable fixation and processing of tissue specimens.  

  • May be required to develop and execute new procedures.  

  • Be capable of identifying problems that may affect test performance or reporting of test results and resolve or immediately report to histology supervisor, technical supervisor, or director.  

  • Assist supervisor with facilitation of departmental training, competency assessments, performance assessments and continuing education.  

  • Provide input to the supervisor for employee performance reviews.  

  • Work closely with technical supervisor/pathologist to ensure proper grossing techniques are adhered to by gross staff.  

  • Maintain the daily operation of the shift in the absence of the histology supervisor.  

  • Assist supervisor with special projects, as assigned.  

  • Ensure all corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met.  

  • Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.  

  • Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.  

  • Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.  

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Work Experience:  



3 years grossing experience.  6 years of experience are required for any individual providing supervisory coverage in a New York State licensed laboratory. 



Preferred Work Experience:  





  • 6 years of grossing experience  




  • Histopathology experience 





Physical and Mental Requirements:  



Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.

Meets all requirements as outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Non-Pathologist Performing Gross Tissue Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR 493.1489.
